The human element
While traditional search engines draw a lot more users many people use web directories instead. The reason for this is that web directories are populated by human editors. Not every page that is submitted will be accepted. Thus the results can be more accurate for what users are searching for.
However, unlike a decade ago, many of the web directories now cost money to submit to. And in the event that your site is rejected the money is non-refundable. So any site that is submitted needs to have original content and stand out from the crowd. We only submit to paid web directories if the client wishes to. We do pass that cost on to the client.
Yet there are still many web directories that do not charge for submission. We submit every site we create to every free web directory that we know of. As the free web directories rely on volunteer editors even if a site is accepted there can still be a long wait for the site to show up. Also, many use a rotating system. The latest site will be at the top of the page until another site is added. These type of web directories only maintain a limited amount of sites per page. Eventually a site added to this type of directory will fall off the bottom of the page and need to resubmit.
